Collies - History

Collies originated in Scotland and for many years were not known anywhere else. They were used as sheepdogs in the Scottish Lowlands. The Collie's name is assumed to have come from the word "colley," which is what sheep with a black face and legs are called. The Collie is one of the most popular breeds and, because of their intelligence, they have been used as rescue dogs, guard dogs, movie stars and guides for the blind. The Collie gained popularity during the 1860s after Queen Victoria discovered the breed and began to keep Collies at her castle in Scotland. During this same time period, the Collie was mixed with the Borzoi. There are two different varieties of the Collie breed, Rough and Smooth. The only difference is that the Rough Collie has the long coat and the Smooth Collie does not. The AKC uses the same standard for the Rough and Smooth with the exception of the coat.

Collies - General Care

Rough Collies' coats need some grooming. Weekly brushing takes care of mats and tangles. Smooth-coated Collies are easier to take care of. They have short coat, which tends to shed more as the hairs fall out. The major hair loss is in spring and fall. Remove the fur from the inner pads of the feet. Collies with dewclaws need them trimmed once a month.
