Collies like any other dog breed, can be abandoned by their owners. There are a number of reasons why owners have to surrender their dogs. The most frequently met one is the lack of time to care for the pet. If you sympathize with rescue Collies, there are certain ways you can help. Adopting a Collie is a noble step. However, if you are not sure you are a match, become a foster caretaker first.
A foster caretaker is a rescuer who takes a Collie into his home or places it in another temporary foster home until a permanent home is found for it. The foster owner takes the responsibility for basic training and evaluating the temperament of the Collie for adoption suitability.
If you are able to help transport dogs, your aid will be much valued. Rescuers help groom Collies for adoption and sometimes will help owners who need assistance with grooming. A rescuer also talks with prospective adopters about Collies to determine whether the breed is really suitable for them.
Collies - Health Problems
A potential buyer should be aware of the possible health problems in the breed. Eye diseases are often reported in Collies. The Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and the Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) are inherited eye diseases found in Collies. Make sure that the dog is determined to be "Normal" eyed, which means free from all possible eye diseases.
Other health problems to watch out for in Collies are bloat, epilepsy, dermatomyositis and ear infections. Buying from a responsible breeder and regular veterinary check-ups are the two ways to keep Collies in good health.
