Collies - General Information

Collies are strong, active, responsive and affectionate herding dogs. They have a muscular body, which is a little long in proportion to the height. The back is strong and level. The loin is slightly arched. The neck is firm and muscular. The tail is long. When the dog is quiet, the tail is carried low. When excited, the tail is carried gaily. The coat is well fit, and abundant except for the head and legs. The Collie's coat can be rough or smooth. The outer coat is straight and harsh. The undercoat is soft and furry. There are four recognized coat colors in Collies. They are sable and white, blue merle, white and tri-color. No certain preference is given to one of these colors.

Medium-sized eyes are almond-shaped, and dark. They express intelligence and inquisitiveness. The ears are in proportion to the size of the dog's head. They are drawn up on the alert.

Collies - Temperament

Collies are friendly, sensitive, playful and very intelligent dogs. They get along well with other pets and love children. These dogs are extremely energetic and tend to become bored if left alone for extended periods. Collies need plenty of exercise to keep them fit and healthy.

Collies are great outdoor dogs. However, they should not be tied or chained. A large fenced yard or a large kennel area is preferable. Collies retain many of the inherited herding abilities, and, therefore, they make excellent working dogs. Collies excel in obedience. They are often used as assist dogs for disabled people. Collies are also successfully used as Avalanche Dogs, Water Rescue Dogs, Drug Detection Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Fire Rescue Dogs and therapy dogs. Collies are very quick learners and this trait enables them to perform well in such a great number of activities.
